Secondo una tradizione , Zeus gli offrì tutto ciò che poteva desiderare , ed endimione scelse un sonno eterno in cui poteva rimanere giovane per sempre . Secondo un'altra versione del mito , Endymion's il sonno eterno era una punizione inflitta da zeus perché aveva osato innamorarsi Zeus's moglie , Hera . In ogni caso , endimione era amato da selene , la dea della luna , che lo visitava tutte le sere mentre dormiva in una grotta sul monte latmus in caria ; lo annoiava 50 figlie . una forma comune del mito rappresenta endymion come se fosse stata messa a dormire da selene stessa in modo che potesse godere indisturbata della sua bellezza .
